Detection of Strong Evolution in the Population of Early-Type Galaxies

چکیده
The standard picture holds that giant elliptical galaxies formed in a single burst at high redshift. Aging of their stellar populations subsequently caused them to fade and become redder. The Canada-France Redshift Survey provides a sample of about 150 galaxies with the luminosities and colours of passively evolving giant ellipticals and with 0.1 < z < 1. This sample is inconsistent with the standard evolutionary picture with better than 99.99% confidence. The standard Schmidt test gives 〈V/Vmax〉 = 0.40 when restricted to objects with no detected star formation, and 〈V/Vmax〉 = 0.42 when objects with emission lines are also included. With increasing redshift a larger and larger fraction of the nearby elliptical and S0 population must drop out of of the sample, either because the galaxies are no longer single units or because star formation alters their colours. If the remaining fraction is modelled as F = (1 + z) , the data imply γ = 1.5 ± 0.3. At z = 1 only about one third of bright E and S0 galaxies were already assembled and had the colours of old passively evolving systems. We discuss the sensitivity of these results to the incompleteness corrections and stellar population models we have adopted. We conclude that neither is uncertain enough to reconcile the observations with the standard picture. Hierarchical galaxy formation models suggest that both merging and recent star formation play a role in the strong evolution we have detected.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملEvolution of early-type galaxies in clusters
The slow evolution of the M/L ratios, colors, and line strengths of cluster early-type galaxies to z ∼ 1 suggests that their stars were formed at very high redshift. At the same time, morphological studies of distant clusters indicate significant evolution in the early-type galaxy population. Striking evidence for strong morphological evolution in clusters is the discovery of a large number of ...
متن کاملDASTWAR: a tool for completeness estimation in magnitude-size plane
Today, great observatories around the world, devote a substantial amount of observing time to sky surveys. The resulted images are inputs of source finder modules. These modules search for the target objects and provide us with source catalogues. We sought to quantify the ability of detection tools in recovering faint galaxies regularly encountered in deep surveys. Our approach was based on com...
متن کاملOn the Size and Comoving Mass Density Evolution of Early-type Galaxies
We present a simple, empirically motivated model that simultaneously predicts the evolution of the mean size and the comoving mass density of massive (> 10 M⊙) early-type galaxies from z = 2 to the present. First we demonstrate that some size evolution of the population can be expected simply due to the continuous emergence of early-type galaxies. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data reveal...
متن کاملThe Effect of Environment on the Uv Color-magnitude Relation of Early-type Galaxies
We use GALEX (Galaxy Evolution Explorer) near-UV (NUV) photometry of a sample of earlytype galaxies selected in SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) to study the UV color-magnitude relation (CMR). NUV − r color is an excellent tracer of even small amounts (∼ 1% mass fraction) of recent (. 1 Gyr) star formation and so the NUV − r CMR allows us to study the effect of environment on the recent star for...
